How to Remove a Transmission; 8 Steps to follow
Here we go! You should consider lifting the vehicle enough to access the transmission. For this, use the jack stands. Be mindful of wearing all protective things such as ‘EYEWEAR’ & ‘GLOVES.’
- In the first step, remove the cable from the negative battery source. It helps to prevent all types of electrical short circuits thoroughly. You may need to remove the exhaust system. If necessary, be careful of removing the exhaust system before removing the transmission.
- Once if you remove the exhaust system, remove the driveshaft mounting bolts. The bolts are easy to unscrew. After unscrewing them, yank the driveshaft forward and separate from the differential. Note: Some vehicles have a carrier, so that you probably need to remove the carrier bolts.
- Make an alignment mark on the rear yoke by the end and do the same with the differential flange. Are the differential yoke attached to the back yoke? It sounds good! You can use a scratch awl to mark the components. This mark will help you when reinstalling the driveshaft. Raise the rear of the vehicle if necessary, using two jack stands.
- Now, remove the rear yoke unscrewing the differential bolts. You probably had the driveshaft on a block. Remember keeping the driveshaft in a horizontal position. If required, you can wrap the rear yoke and the caps with the masking tape. It prevents the caps from falling off! Have you seen any middle support bracket in the driveshaft? Remove it!
- Remember to place a drain pan under the transmission, especially by the rear of the transmission. You can keep the transmission from leaking. Use plastic bags or shop rags in case. You’ll see the modulator vacuum line. Remove the oil filler tube of the transmission along with the speedometer cable and wires from the transmission. Then, disconnect the more free cord from the transmission. You’re recommended to use a tube wrench to do this!
- Now, remove the rear transmission mount along with the exhaust tube and additional circuits easily. Be conscious of keeping bolts and screws where you are keeping them or from where you have unscrewed them.
- Remove the bell housing now. Unscrew the engine block bolts. You are recommended to use a wrench and a ratchet. You can now withdraw the cover between the transmissions. Do you get access to the torque converter now? Unscrew the converter’s bolts now. It will help you remove the mounting torque converter successfully.
- At last, go under the transmission oil pan! Position a transmission jack and raise the jack in the right position where the transmission remains onto the vehicle frame. Fit the transmission to the jack clamps and pull the transmission off. Is it separated from the engine? Lower the jack & you’re done!
